MIPSThe Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program (MIPS), a highly effective innovation development program managed by the Clark School's Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech), approved 15 new high-technology and biotechnology product development grants worth $4.2 million. The grants, which support research by University System of Maryland faculty members in partnership with Maryland companies, include new drugs, treatments or tests for breast cancer, staph infections and malaria, "green" heated chicken house flooring, a pedal/electric motorcycle, superior quality glucosamine, and a stylish plug-in electric hybrid car.

The International Economic Development Council presented Mtech's MIPS program with its Excellence in Economic Development Award in the category of Partnerships with Educational Institutions for communities with populations over 500,000.

Clean Energy Business ChallengeThe University of Maryland and its Atlantic Coast Conference partners launched the new ACC $100K Clean Energy Business Challenge this past fall, encouraging students from universities in the southeastern United States to develop successful business plans and create new clean energy companies. Mtech was selected as the principal lead for the Southeast competition.

The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur Magazine named the University of Maryland as one of the nation's top schools for entrepreneurially-minded students. Their latest ranking of campus entrepreneurship programs puts Maryland at No. 18 (No. 9 among public) for undergraduate and No. 22 (No. 12 among public) for graduate entrepreneurship programs.

Bioengineering graduate student and Fischell Fellow Marc Dandin, his co-advisor Assistant Professor Pamela Abshire (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering [ECE]), and David Sander (Ph.D. '11, ECE, also advised by Abshire) received the first Jimmy H. C. Lin Award for Entrepreneurship from the Clark School in recognition of their business plan for Ibis Microtech.

ECE Professor K. J. Ray Liu received the inaugural Jimmy H. C. Lin Award for Invention along with students Wan-Yi Lin and Nathan Goergen, in recognition of their project "Active Sensing for Dynamic Spectrum Access.”
