Lawrence Carin
(B.S. '85, M.S. '86 and Ph.D. '89, EE) was recently named chair of the Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering at Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering.
Mihai Dimian
(Ph.D. '05, EE, pictured), advised by Isaak Mayergoyz, has been promoted
to the position of Full Professor of
Engineering at Stefan cel Mare University in Romania. He was appointed by the Romanian Minister of
Education.
Mustafa Beyaz
(M.S. ’08 and Ph.D. ’11, EE), advised by Reza Ghodssi, has accepted a position as an assistant professor in the Department of
Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Antalya International University in Turkey.
Kenneth R. Bell
(B.S. ’74, M.S. ’77 and Ph.D. ’83, civil engineering) has been selected as a Bechtel Fellow to advise
senior management on questions related to their areas of expertise, participate in strategic
planning, and help disseminate new technical ideas and findings throughout the company.

president of the National Hydrologic Warning Council in Denver, Colo.
Howard
(Skip) Harclerode (B.S. '70 and M.S. '71, chemical engineering) has been elected
northeastern zone vice president of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and
Surveying.
Ramit Varma (B.S. ’96, EE), co-founder of Revolution Prep, gave
a Whiting-Turner Business and Entrepreneurial Lecture at the Clark School titled “Lessons Learned
from a Bootstrapped Entrepreneur.”
Jennifer Au
(B.S. '11, chemical engineering) was one of two Clark School students invited to deliver a plenary
talk at the 2011 National Institute of Standards and Technology's Summer Undergraduate Research
Fellowships Colloquium. Au's presentation was titled "Enzyme Digestion and Mass Spectral
Characterization of Glycoproteins.”
James A. DeShazer
(B.S. '60, agriculture, and B.S. '61, mechanical engineering) published the monograph Livestock
Energetics and Thermal Environmental Management (American Society of Biological and Agricultural
Engineers 2009). He is a professor emeritus at the University of Idaho.
Dennis P. Nolan
(B.S. '77, fire protection engineering) published the third edition of his book Safety and Security
Review for the Process Industries (Elsevier Publications) in November 2011.
Michael O'Connor
(M.S. '94, civil engineering) has received a National Pacesetter Award from the Association of Physical
Plant Administrators. He is the director of Appalachian State University's Physical Plant.
Kimberly Brown
(M.S. '98 and Ph.D. '05, chemical engineering) received the Baltimore SmartCEO Brava! Women Business
Achievement Award. She is president and CEO of Amethyst Technologies, LLC in Baltimore, Md.
