Magazine named Clark School alumnus and benefactor A. James Clark
(B.S. '50, civil engineering)
one of its Washingtonians of the Year. The honor recognizes those in the area who
"give their time and talents to make this a better place for all of us," according
to the magazine's web site.
Jeong H. Kim (Ph.D. '91, reliability engineering) was inducted into the University of Maryland Alumni
Hall of Fame.

Akcora (Ph.D. '05, chemical engineering), formerly advised by Fischell Department
of Bioengineering Professor Peter Kofinas, has received a National
Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (NSF CAREER) Award for a proposal
titled "Multi-functional Particle Assemblies in Polymer Nanocomposites."
Zhu Han
(M.S. ’99 and Ph.D ’03, electrical engineering), assistant professor of electrical and
computer engineering at the University of Houston, has won an NSF CAREER Award for his
research, titled "Mutual Benefit in Cognitive Radio Networks: A Coalitional Game
Framework."
Fumin
Zhang (Ph.D. '04,
electrical engineering) received a Young Investigator Program (YIP) grant
from the Office of Naval Research, one of only 17 awarded nationwide. The YIP invests
in academic scientists and engineers who show exceptional promise for creative study.
Zhang was advised by Professor P.S. Krishnaprasad (Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering [ECE]/Institute of Systems Research [ISR]).
Mark B.
Tischler (B.S. ’78 and M.S. ’79, aerospace engineering) received the
2009 Presidential Rank Award
as a Distinguished Senior Professional from the Secretary of the Army.
The Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers elected Jafar Saniie (B.S. '74, electrical
engineering), an electrical and computer engineering faculty member at Illinois Institute
of Technology, to its class of 2010 fellows for his contributions to ultrasonic signal
processing for detection, estimation and imaging.

Post-doctoral
researcher Peng Wang (Ph.D. '07, mechanical engineering) was acknowledged as
the 2009 Outstanding Reviewer for his work on the Journal of Heat Transfer, published
by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Michigan State
University (MSU) Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Xiaobo Tan (M.S. ’99 and Ph.D. '02, electrical engineering) received the Teacher-Scholar Award at
MSU's Awards Convocation ceremony. The university-wide award is given to faculty members
who have earned the respect of students and colleagues early in their careers for their
devotion to teaching and scholarly promise.
John Mularski (B.S. '05 and M.S. '07, aerospace engineering) received the Space Flight Awareness
Launch Honoree Award for his work in support of NASA's Space Shuttle and International
Space Station programs at Johnson Space Center.

Daniel J. Farnoly (M.Eng. ’07) earned his Wings of Gold at a ceremony at Naval Air
Station Whiting Field in Florida in October.
Richard
Stamper (Ph.D. '97, mechanical engineering) has been appointed interim associate dean for
professional experiences at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.
Yan
Lindsay Sun (M.S. ’03 and Ph.D. ’04, electrical engineering) was promoted
to associate professor
with tenure at the University of Rhode Island. She has served there as assistant professor
of electrical, computer and biomedical engineering since 2006.
Petru Andrei (Ph.D. '04, electrical engineering) was recently promoted
with tenure to the position of associate professor of electrical and computer
engineering at Florida State University and Florida A&M University. Andrei was
advised by Professor Isaak Mayergoyz (ECE).
Peng
Qiu (M.S. ’06 and Ph.D. '07, electrical engineering) has joined the Department of
Bioinformatics and Computational Biology as Assistant Professor at the University
of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Qiu was advised by
Professor K. J. Ray Liu (ECE).
ECE alumnus Amr El Sherif (M.S. ’08 and Ph.D. '09, electrical engineering)
has joined Alexandria University, Egypt, as an assistant professor. He was advised by
Professor K. J. Ray Liu (ECE).
Ahmed
Ibrahim (M.S. ’07 and Ph.D. '09, electrical engineering) has joined Cairo University, Egypt,
as an assistant professor. Ibrahim was advised by Professor K. J. Ray Liu (ECE).
David Mongan (B.S. '71 and M.S. '76, civil engineering) has been appointed to the
Maryland State Board for Professional Engineers.

M. Naved (M.S. '92, electrical engineering) has been appointed
to the Maryland State Board of Education.
Brent Sherwood (M.S. '88, aerospace engineering) just
published Out of This World: The New Field
of Space Architecture. It is an edited survey of orbital architecture, planet
surface architecture and terrestrial space architecture.
Alan
Orloff (B.S. '82, mechanical engineering) published his first novel, Diamonds for the
Dead. The first book in his new series, Killer Routine, will be
available in the spring of 2011.
