Dave AnandThe Center for Energetic Concepts Development (CECD), under the leadership of Professor Emeritus Dave Anand (mechanical engineering [ME]), has signed a new $10 million, five-year collaborative agreement with the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) at Indian Head, Md., in the area of energetics. The agreement will build on various collaborative technical activities between CECD and NSWC Indian Head over the last 10 years.

Rajeev BaruaAssociate Professor Rajeev Barua (electrical and computer engineering [ECE]/Institute for Systems Research [ISR]) is the University of Maryland's principal investigator (PI) for a large research grant recently acquired through the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). This research program is known as AESOP, or Adaptive Environment for Supercompiling with Optimized Parallelism. The University of Maryland will collaborate with BAE Systems Inc. and Princeton University on this four-year, $11.5 million DARPA-sponsored program, with the University of Maryland's share consisting of $2.53 million. Alan Sussman (University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies [UMIACS]/computer science [CS]) and Rance Cleaveland (ISR/CS) are co-PIs.

Steve MarcusProfessor Steve Marcus (ECE/ISR) is co-PI for the University of Maryland’s portion of a major new National Science Foundation (NSF) collaborative research grant, “Next-Generation Model Checking and Abstract Interpretation with a Focus on Embedded Control and Systems Biology.” The five-year, $10 million project is part of NSF’s “Expeditions in Computing” initiative. UM’s part of the project is worth $1.8 million. Along with Marcus, Professor Rance Cleaveland (CS/ISR) is the PI for the project, and Tongtong Wu, assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of Public Health, is also a co-PI.

Gary RubloffProfessor Gary Rubloff (materials science and engineering [MSE]/ISR/Maryland NanoCenter) is the co-PI on an interdisciplinary research collaboration with the Joint Quantum Institute that has been awarded a five-year, $2.8 million grant from the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (through the Army Research Office) to devise, fabricate, study and test a new kind of key component for quantum computing. Rubloff is joined on the project by JQI Fellows Victor Galitski (physics) and PI Chris Lobb (physics); Kevin Osborn (Laboratory for Physical Sciences); and co-PI Charles Musgrave (University of Colorado at Boulder).

Ichiro TakeuchiProfessor Ichiro Takeuchi (MSE) has received a three-year, $2 million grant from DARPA for a proposal titled "MEMS/NEMS Based Multiferroic Magnetic Sensors for Sub-Femto Tesla Detection." DARPA is interested in developing the technology to expand our ability to detect threats including concealed weapons and explosives.


Nuno MartinsA team of Clark School faculty members has won a three-year, $1.5 million NSF grant for "Ant-Like Microrobots—Fast, Small, and Under Control." Assistant Professor Nuno Martins (ECE/ISR) is PI. Co-PIs are Associate Professor Pamela Abshire (ECE/ISR), Associate Professor Elisabeth Smela (ME) and Assistant Professor Sarah Bergbreiter (ME/ISR).

Elias BalarasAssociate Professor Elias Balaras (Fischell Department of Bioengineering) is the project leader of a multidisciplinary team that has been awarded a four-year, $1.5 million NSF grant for a project titled "Petascale Algorithms for Multi-Body, Fluid-Structure Interactions in Viscous Incompressible Flows." Balaras's co-PIs on the project are Professor Joseph JaJa (ECE/UMIACS), Assistant Professor Santiago Solares (ME) and Senior Computational Scientist Anshu Dubey (Advanced Simulation and Computing Center for Astrophysical Thermonuclear Flashes, University of Chicago).

Michael L. PackMichael L. Pack, director of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering's Center for Advanced Transportation Technology Laboratory, has received a $1.3 million Urban Area Security Initiative grant, awarded by the Department of Homeland Security. His project aims to strengthen information sharing and collaboration capabilities within the national capital region by expanding upon the existing Regional Integrated Transportation Information System.
