Alumnus Sanjeev
Khudanpur (Ph.D. '97,
electrical engineering [EE]) was recently promoted to the position of associate professor with tenure in the
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. During his time as a graduate
student at the Clark School, Sanjeev was advised by Prof. Prakash Narayan (electrical
and computer engineering
[ECE]/Institute for Systems Research [ISR]).
Karim Seddik
(M.S. '07 and Ph.D. '08, EE) has accepted a position as assistant professor of electrical engineering
at Alexandria University, Egypt. Seddik was advised by ECE Professor and Associate
Chair for Graduate Studies and Research K. J. Ray Liu.
Shih-Huang
Tung (Ph.D. '07, chemical engineering [CHE]) has accepted a position as an
assistant professor at National Taiwan University's Institute for Polymer Science and Engineering at National
Taiwan University, the most prestigious university in Taiwan.
Sasan Bakhtiari
(M.S. '03, EE, and M.A. '05 and Ph.D. '08, economics) has joined the faculty of the University of New
South Wales in Sydney, Australia as a lecturer.
Andres
Kwasinski (M.S. '00 and Ph.D. '04, EE) has joined the faculty of the Department of
Computer Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Kwasinski was advised by Prof.
K. J. Ray Liu (ECE/ISR).
Pinar Akcora
(Ph.D. '05, CHE), formerly advised by Professor Peter Kofinas (bioengineering), has been appointed to a
tenure-track position as an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the
University of Missouri.
Xiangrong
Zhou (Ph.D. '08, EE) has accepted a faculty position with the University of Hawaii's electrical
engineering department. He is advised by Assistant Professor Peter Petrov (ECE).
Alkan Soysal
(M.S. '06 and Ph.D. '08, EE) has joined the faculty of Bahçeşehir University, Istanbul,
Turkey, as an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
He was advised by Associate Professor Sennur Ulukus (ECE/ISR).
David R. Sadowski
(B.S. '75 and M.S. '77, CHE) has been appointed the assistant vice president for intellectual
property management and commercialization at the University of Rhode Island.
Nikos Sidiropoulos
(M.S. '90 and Ph.D. '92, EE) has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for "contributions to signal processing for communications.”
Sidiropoulos is a professor in the Telecommunications Division of the Technical University of
Crete. He was a student of Professor John Baras (ECE/ISR).
William J.
Wright (B.S. '87 and M.S. '92, civil engineering [CEE]) is the recipient of the 2008 American Iron
and Steel Institute/American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Richard S.
Fountain Award in recognition of "outstanding contributions to the steel bridge industry through
structural research, technical guidance and design code development."
Jaganath Sankaran
(Master of Engineering and Public Policy '08) won a 2008 International Space University Scholarship
from the National Space Society. Sankaran also received a University of Maryland Flagship Fellowship
as he works towards a Ph.D. in public policy.

Muluwork Geremew (M.S. '06, EE) has been named a 2009 Most Promising Engineer by Career Communications Group. She will
be honored at the 23rd Annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference. She was advised
by Prof. Joseph JaJa (ECE).
Peter
DeMuth (B.S. '08, CHE and biochemistry) was named the 2008 University Medalist. The award
recognizes a University of Maryland graduating senior who best exemplifies academic distinction,
extraordinary character and extracurricular contributions to the university or public communities.
Michael Griffin,
(Ph.D. '77, aerospace engineering [AE]) and head of NASA, was honored with the Ameican Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Summerfield
Book Award along with James French, his co-author on Space Vehicle Design, 2nd Edition. The
award goes to the best book published by the AIAA each year.
Chip Badger
(M.S. '76, CivE) has been appointed acting director of the Virginia Department of Rail and
Public Transportation.
Stephen A.
Ruffa (B.S. '82, AE) has released his latest book on lean dynamics, Going Lean: How the Best
Companies Apply Lean Manufacturing Principles to Shatter Uncertainty, Drive Innovation, and Maximize
Profits. Ruffa gave a Whiting-Turner Business and Entrepreneurial Lecture in the fall of 2008.
For the second
consecutive year, Seok Jin Kim (Ph.D. '08, EE) won the best student paper award at
IEEE AUTOTESTCON, the world's only conference focused primarily on automated testing for integrated
systems technology aimed at military, government and aerospace applications. Kim won the award for
a paper titled "High-speed ADC Dynamic Performance Validation: the Impact of Skew-corner Lot
Testing." Seokjin was advised by ECE Professor Martin Peckerar.
A paper written
by Imran Shamim (B.S. '07, EE) took first prize in the Technical Report category in the Annual
Writing Contest of the University of Maryland’s Professional Writing Program. Shamim's paper was
a technical report titled "Design, Simulation, and Layout of a Serial Digital-to-Analog Converter
(DAC) Array for On-Chip, Analog Parameter Control."
