KEYs to Empowering Youth | A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland

KEYs to Empowering Youth is a science and technology mentoring program for girls in grades 6-8.  Participants will have the opportunity to meet and collaborate with women studying and working in science and engineering at the University of Maryland. The KEYs program provides interactive, hands-on activities that stress the importance of engineering, science, technology, and their impact on society.

The KEYs Program Includes:

  1. Welcome and Icebreaker
  2. Lunch
  3. A chance to engage in a variety of hands-on engineering activities (samples below)
    • Hypercoasters
    • Chemical Reactions
    • Circuits
    • Frictional Forces
  4. Closing Ceremony: Includes an interactive review of the day's activities and recognition for participation (Parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to attend).

SPRING PROGRAM DATE: Saturday, March 30, 2019/ 10am-2pm

Registration opens on Friday, February 8, 2019.
In addition registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Space in the program is limited, so please be aware that successful submission of the application does not guarantee your girl a spot in the program. WIE will not accept participants after the application window is closed if they are not already on the waiting list, nor will WIE accept registrants on site the day of the event. Returning KEYs participants are welcome to apply. Please fill out the KEYs application as soon as possible to secure a spot in the program.

  • Registration Fee of $25.00 for each registered participant, which can be submitted online once regsitration is complete.

There is a $25.00 registration fee per participant to cover the cost of a pizza lunch and activity supplies. Upon the completion and successful submission of online registration, you will be asked to submit payment of $25.00 per participant. Please note that if you registered more than one participant, you will need to use the same weblink to submit the registration fee for the second student as well.
 
If you are unable to pay $25.00 at the time of registration please inform Sama Sabihi at ssabihi@umd.edu as soon as possible.

KEYs will take place in the Computer Science Instructional Center (CSIC). To find the building using your GPS, use the following address:

Parking Information:
The closest FREE parking to CSIC is available in lot 11b (see map below). This lot is near the Xfinity Center in the north-east corner of campus. Parking in lot 11b is permitted for free on weekends.  
 
It is important that you follow parking restrictions, as parking is rather strict on campus. Unfortunately, we are not able to assist if you receive a parking violation.

Directions to lot 11b and CSIC:
From the main entrance of campus:
  • Once you enter campus, make the first right onto Paint Branch Drive. 
  • Lot 11B is located on your right at the 2nd stop sign - the Xfinity Center is on your left.
  • Once you've parked, walk back down Paint Brand Drive (from where you just came)
  • CSIC is tucked back, behind a large building under construction.
Drop Off & Pick Up
Parents and guardians are encouraged to drop participants off for the day, as we want to provide an environment that allows for collaboration and teamwork among peers.  
We hope that you will return in time to join us for the closing ceremony at 2:00 p.m.
If you are unable to attend the ceremony, please make sure to pick up participants at 2:30 pm.
