Innovative Wireless Telecom Pioneer to be Honored: |

October 12, 2006 *MEDIA ADVISORY* WHAT: The A. James Clark School of Engineering inducts its 2006 honoree into the Innovation Hall of Fame, which celebrates technological innovations by Clark School alumni, faculty and friends and serves as an inspiration to students. Past members pioneered such technologies as the universal product code (bar code), Doppler radar, the flexible coronary artery stent, retractable airplane landing gear. WHO: Rajiv Laroia, M.S. '89 and Ph.D. '92 in electrical engineering, developed technologies that will help companies bring enhanced Internet functions to mobile phones and doubled the speed of data over telephone line modems. He recently sold his company, Flarion Technologies, to communications giant QUALCOMM. Laroia now serves as CTO of QUALCOMM Flarion Technologies. U-Md. President C.D. Mote, Jr. will be on hand to confer the 2006 Innovation Hall of Fame medallion to Laroia. WHEN: October 16, 2006 ###
