Title: Staircase Codes: Forward-error-correcting Codes for High-speed Optical Communication

Speaker: Prof. Frank R. Kschischang, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Toronto

Abstract: Error-correcting codes are used to provide ultra-reliable communication of bits at very high speeds through long-haul optical fiber transport networks.  In this talk, I will describe a family of spatially-coupled algebraically-decoded codes called staircase codes, now adopted in various international standards such as ITU G.709.2, IEEE 802.3, and OIF 400G-ZR.  A new generalization of these codes, called zipper codes, will also be described, along with recent results in the design of complexity-optimized concatenated codes for fiber-optic communications.

Biography: Frank R. Kschischang is the Distinguished Professor of Digital Communication in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto. His research interests are focused primarily on the area of channel-coding techniques, particularly in fiber-optic communications. He has won several awards for teaching, research, and service, including the 2010 University of Toronto Faculty Award of Excellence, the 2010 IEEE Communications Society and Information Theory Society Joint Paper Award, the 2018 IEEE Information Theory Society Paper Award, and the 2016 IEEE Information Theory Society Aaron D. Wyner Distinguished Service Award. Professor Kschischang served as the 2010 President of the IEEE Information Theory Society and from 2014 to 2016 he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory. Professor Kschischang is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.  Homepagehttps://www.comm.utoronto.ca/frank
