Dr. Butler received his Ph.D. in applied physics from Cork Institute of Technology, Ireland, where he studied the dynamics of swept frequency lasers for 3-D imaging applications. He joined the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in 2017, working in the group of Prof. Ferenc Krausz on the development of next generation ultrafast mid-infrared lasers for biological spectroscopy. As of January 2020, he is working in the group of Prof. Thomas Murphy in IREAP, developing a near field optical scanning microscope for use in ultrafast pump-probe and spectroscopy experiments.
