The Institute for Systems Research

Ms. Ellie Gianni is an Adjunct Faculty Member and Instructor in the Systems Engineering Graduate Program at the University of Maryland’s Institute for Systems Research. She has lectured at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) as part of the Engineering for Professionals Graduate Program and is retired as a Senior Professional Staff Member from the JHU Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). She has more than 35 years of experience as a practicing systems engineer serving clients in a multitude of technical and leadership positions across government and industry on a global scale spanning all levels and facets of the field. These positions include:  systems engineering consultant, subject matter expert, task, project, program, and proposal manager for clients that included: Department of Homeland Security (DHS), National Security Agency (NSA), Department of Defense (DoD), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), DMC Consulting, Northrop Grumman, Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), Department of State (DOS), US Agency for International Development (USAID), The American Institute in Taiwan, (AIT), Diplomatic Telecommunications Service Program Office (DTSPO), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Bendix Field Engineering Corporation a.k.a. Allied Signal Technical Services.  

Gianni has a Master of Science degree in Computer Systems Management from the University of Maryland Global Campus and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. She is certified as an Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP) by the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) where she is also a member and a Certification Mentor. She is a past president of the INCOSE Chesapeake Chapter and member of the INCOSE Foundation Board of Directors, AFCEA, and IEEE.  

Across government and industry, Gianni has been recognized with letters of commendation from JHU/APL for her work with the DoD sponsor; The SI Organization (formerly Lockheed Martin) for Net Centric Computing (NCC) systems engineering support for the DoD; the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) for post-911 collaboration inter-agency program management support; the DoD for leadership in the management and systems engineering associated with their wide area network modernization; and NASA for work performed on the Broadband X-Ray Telescope program, as a Source Evaluation Board member, and as a Contracting Officer’s Technical Representative. She has received technical excellence awards from CSC, for her leadership in managing the NSA network modernization programs; and for work performed on the NASA Systems Engineering and Analysis Support contract.
