The Engineering Career Services Office in the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland is committed to supporting employers as they navigate the recruiting process during this unprecedented time.

Updating Candidates
In this time of uncertainty, our students and future grads are likely concerned about their future plans. To help alleviate fears and provide some level of reassurance, we encourage employers to communicate openly with candidates and new hires regarding their organization’s operating status. We recognize that this is an evolving situation and circumstances are changing quickly, however, we believe that providing periodic updates and resources to keep students informed of their status and options will be beneficial. As we receive inquiries, we will encourage students to contact their employers directly to ask specific questions and seek clarification as appropriate.

Rescinding or Deferring Employment Offers
While organizations work to mitigate the potential unprecedented health and economic impact brought on by COVID-19, we hope that rescinding offers will be a last resort. Further, we strongly encourage employers to make a good faith effort to explore all available options prior to rescinding or significantly deferring employment offers.

Recruiting Norms during COVID-19
If you are holding interviews or events at your location, follow the Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention (CDC) recommendations, including a “no handshake” policy to help limit the potential for the virus to spread between people.
For virtual interviews, please also keep in mind that students may be limited to their homes or other shared spaces, and may be unable to conduct a virtual interview in a private space.  This may result in additional background noise and other minor disruptions during the interview that are outside of the candidate’s control.
