Nominate an Engineer for the Innovation Hall of Fame in 2006 Does one of your professors or a fellow alumnus/a deserve recognition for an innovative product, system or design, or a comprehensive body of technical work that has advanced the understanding of the engineering profession? What better way to provide that recognition than the Clark School's Innovation Hall of Fame? Please fill out the quick and easy nomination form by December 1. "Ethernet and Entrepreneurship"—A Whiting-Turner Lecture by Robert Metcalfe Renowned entrepreneur and venture capitalist Robert Metcalfe, founder of 3Com Corporation and inventor of Ethernet, will be the next lecturer in the Whiting-Turner Business and Entrepreneurial Lecture Series. Please join us for his lecture in the Kim Engineering Building at 5 p.m. on Thursday, December 8. Career Builders: New Programs in Project Management The Clark School will offer in spring 2006 an online Master of Engineering degree in Project Management that is designed by engineers for engineers (deadline to apply: Dec. 15, 2005); and a Professional Development Program in Project Management for beginning, intermediate, and advanced certificate students (rolling deadline). Engineers Without Borders Earlier this year, 12 Clark School students working with Engineers Without Borders traveled to Patadel, Ecuador, and built a new water storage tank and distribution system to supplement the town's antiquated structure. The project was an overwhelming success and the group has been welcomed back to do future projects in Ecuador. Corporate Partners Are you looking for a job? David Edsall (a former civil engineering student) was featured in the Maryland Gazette as "the recognized leader in replica golf design, having fashioned a half-dozen of the world's replica golf concept courses." W. Jeff Holtzinger (B.S. '87 civil engineering) has been elected mayor of Frederick, Md. Previously, Holtzinger served as assistant city engineer and city engineer for Frederick. N. Patrick Kelly (M.S. '92 electrical engineering) has been hired by SigmaTel Inc. to be vice president of engineering for the Portable System on Chip Group. In this position, Kelly will oversee silicon engineering management and development responsibilities focused on the company's portable multimedia System on Chip (SoC) solutions. Jerry A. Krill (Ph.D. '78 electrical engineering) has been appointed assistant director for programs at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Balaji Panchapakesan (Ph.D. '01 mechanical engineering) has developed what is being billed as the "cancer nanobomb." Panchapakesan is now an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Delaware and is working on nanotechnologies for cancer detection and treatment, including a "nanobomb" that can literally blow up tumors. Steve Schrantz (B.S. '84 mechanical engineering) has been named a principal engineer in structural and life methods for GE Aircraft Engines in Evendale, Ohio. Schrantz is a licensed professional engineer in Ohio and received a M.S. in 1987 from the University of Cincinnati. Schrantz and his wife, Danielle, have two children, Joe and Emma, and live in West Chester, Ohio. The Clark School Mourns the Passing of. Over the past month, we have said goodbye to alumni Gerard H. Schlimm (Ph.D. '70 civil engineering) and Wayne A. Sanders (B.S. '72 aerospace engineering). In addition, we are saddened to report the loss of Edna Hokenson, benefactor of the Gustave J. Hokenson Fellowship for graduate students in the Department of Aerospace Engineering.
