Norris Krone, Jr., '55, '74 Ph.D., was the recipient of the 2004 Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award.

Krone is the president and CEO of the University Research Foundation responsible for the Maryland Advanced Development Laboratory's activities. He is also leader and founder of the Maryland Small Aircraft Laboratory, a NASA-sponsored alliance of 14 organizations.

As a previous director of the Air Vehicle Technology Office of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Krone developed the technical principles of the forward swept wing aircraft concept.

For these efforts, Aviation Week and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics recognized him as a major contributor to the aeronautical sciences.

Before earning his doctorate in 1974, Krone served as a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force, flying more than 200 missions as a forward air controller in Vietnam, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and Vietnamese Medal of Honor.
